Saturday 19th and
Sunday 20th April 2008 - West Midlands Tour
Wetherby RUFC U9's tour to the
Midlands started strongly with two victories at Tamworth. In
the first match, Wetherby were able to exploit lapses in the
opposition's defence with two tries from the pacy George Heaton
and one each from James Danforth, Freddie Loach, Thomas Townsend
and man of the morning Iwan Dunlop who had an excellent game in
terms of both tackling and attacking; final Score 6-1 to
Wetherby. In the second closer game, Tamworth came back
strongly but the tourists were still able to overcome them for a
4-3 victory with scores from Heaton, Dunlop and Danforth again
as well as Devdan Patel. The tour then moved on National League
2 side, Nuneaton RFC, where the U9s had three tough games with
both sides looking well organised and defensively strong. The
first game was lost 2-1 in the last minute, with a try from Jack
Thackery the only compensation. In the second game, he scored
again as did Harvey Wiggett, Andrew Shepherd and man of the
morning, the elusive and quick Thomas Townsend; final score 4-2
to Wetherby. And in the decider, Wetherby played out of their
skins to record a 2-1 victory with Shepherd and Townsend running
in to score once more to cap an enjoyable and rewarding weekend
in style.

Sunday 13th April
2008 - Yorkshire Plate
Wetherby
5 vs West Park Barbarians
2
Wetherby
5 vs Sandal 0
Wetherby
3 vs Roundhegians 3
(after extra time)
Wetherby RUFC U9s had a successful morning at the Yorkshire
Plate competition. The first match was against a
Barbarians team composed mostly of players from West Park:
Wetherby took control early on, ruthlessly exploiting holes in
the Baa-baas' defence and eventually winning 5-2 with one try
from James Danforth and four from pacy fly-half George Heaton.
Versus Sandal, Wetherby's rucking
and mauling improved resulting in a more comprehensive 5-0
victory, with two tries each from Alexander Smith and Nathan
Woods and one from Andrew Shepherd.
The final against Roundhegians was
a tight affair, with strong defence from both teams keeping the
score to 2-2 at the end of full time (tries from Jack Thackray
and Andrew Shepherd). An exciting period of extra time
couldn't split the teams, final score 3-3, with another try from
Jack Thackray, and the trophy was deservedly shared. |

Sunday 16th March 2008
Wetherby 3 vs York
3
Wetherby 3 vs
Guisborough 2
Wetherby RUFC U9s played two close
home fixtures against local team York and tourists Guisborough.
In a hard-fought tie against York, Wetherby played tenaciously
with a determined defence and managed to grind out a 3-3 draw
with a try from George Stocker and two tries from Man of the
Morning James Damforth, breaking up the wing both times to score
in the left corner.
Against Guisborough, Wetherby
tackled ferociously although perhaps they could have protected
the ball better in the ruck. They were unlucky to concede
two break-away tries against the run of play but Reece Lawson,
George Stocker and Nathan Woods left the score 3-2 to Wetherby. |
Castleford RUFC U9s v Wetherby
RUFC U9s - Sunday 3rd February 2008.
Wetherby RUFC U9s played four
quarters away at Castleford finishing on an aggregate score
of 7-1 to the good. In their first match George Heaton
exploited weaknesses in Castleford's defence and used his
pace to score in the corner followed by Devdan Patel
opportunistically ripping the ball away at a Castleford
lineout before spinning and diving over for a try. The
second quarter was closer, ending 1-1 despite Heaton once
more running in from the fly-half position directly from a
scrum. The third match saw James Damforth running up the
right wing from the Wetherby half to for great individual
try following on from a sustained period of Castleford
pressure. And in the final game George Stocker, Andrew
Shepherd and Alexander Smith all scored to end the
last tie 3-0 up. Despite the positive score line, overall
Wetherby will in the future need to concentrate more on
playing as a team and passing a lot more fluently rather
than acting as individuals trying to score at every
opportunity. Man of the Morning was Nathan Woods for his
excellent tackling.

RUFC U9s v West Park - Sunday 13th January 2008.
Wetherby RUFC U9s took on two
strong West Park teams and lost all of their matches
although the scores don't necessarily reflect the closeness
of some of the ties. Wetherby A went down 1-0 and 5-2 in
their respective games with both games evenly balanced
particularly in terms of the forward play, where Wetherby's
rucking and mauling has come on considerably in the last few
weeks. Wetherby's tries were scored by Jack Thackray and
Will Gomersall who, along with George Heaton, deserve
special mention for their strong contributions. Wetherby B
also lost both of their games, 7-1 and 4-2, with two tries
from Alexander Smith and one from Harvey Wiggett. Once more
the progress the entire team has made was evident, with
improved rucking and more fluent passing leading to some
excellent passages of play with Freddie Loach and William
Smailes particularly deserving a mention.

RUFC U9s v Castleford - Sunday 2nd December 2007
Wetherby RUFC U9s took on
Castleford at home on a filthy Sunday morning and a much
improved performance saw them finish 4-2 to the good. The
visitors took the lead but Wetherby pressed well and soon
equalised with Alexander Smith driving over from a 5m lineout.
Soon after the break the Castleford team ran in another try
to go ahead once more but this was soon cancelled out by a fine
darting run from Man of the Morning Will Gomersall. After
another period of pressure, a strong run from Jack Thackray put
Wetherby into the lead. In the dying moments a penalty was
awarded to Castleford on their own line, however, in the play
that followed, George Stocker stole the ball and dashed to the
line to make the closing score 4-2 to Wetherby. |
Wetherby
RUFC U9s v Old Leodiensians - Sunday 25th November 2007
Wetherby RUFC u9s lost three
and drew one of four short games away at Old Leodiensians.
Wetherby started reasonably well, tackling vigorously and
maintaining a tolerable shape and were unlucky to lose the
first game 2-3 with tries coming from Man of the Morning
Jack Thackray and Andrew Shepherd, both moves well
finished and originating from good forward play. Their
second and third games were considerably more disappointing
with an over-eagerness to attempt to pick up the ball in the
ruck yielding repeated turnovers to the opposition and
resulting in 5-0 and 3-0 losses respectively. In the final
game Wetherby played better to tie 1-1, Thackray scoring an
excellent individual try with another single-minded and
powerful charge to the line.

Wetherby RUFC U9s at
the Yorkshire Cup - Sunday 18th November 2007
Wetherby U9s had a disappointing
morning at the Yorkshire Cup losing all three of their games.
In their first game against Otley they lost 4-0 primarily
because of missed tackling and a lack of defensive discipline.
The next tie versus Yarnbury started poorly with two early tries
conceded after a series of missed tackles. However from then on
Wetherby managed to dig deep and actually began to play the
rugby of which they are capable. Although they lost the game
4-1 with a try from George Heaton coming from Man of the Morning
Harvey Wiggett's deft offload, Jack Thackray was unlucky not to
score after accidentally over-running the try area. In their
final game against West Park (against whom they'd lost heavily a
few weeks before), Wetherby were left playing for their pride.
In a hard game, Wetherby tackled like demons and they were
extremely unfortunate to lose 3-2 with a pushover try from
Heaton and a tank-like charge from half-way from Alexander
Smith. match photos (thank you to Jo Danforth for providing

Wetherby v West Park
Leeds - Sunday 28th October 2007
Wetherby RUFC u9s had a disappointing morning away at West Park
Bramhope losing both of their fixtures by a wide margin (7-0 and
5-1). Wetherby's tackling in particular was below par resulting
in several scores against them and, when players were able to
make any significant ground, a lack of incoming support often
led immediately to turned over ball. Highlights from the morning
were a single try from Alexander Smith who in typical fashion
was able to break West Park's line from short range with an
unstoppable charge and some good defence and strong running from
Man of the Morning Nathan Woods. |
