Match Reports 2007-8
Central Yorkshire Festival - Sunday 13th April 2008

Wetherby's U7 blue team (A) lost in the final to Aireborough having beaten Otley A and Sandal A to get there. Jacob Little was through for the equalising try with seconds but a collision with an opposing player sent him to the ground so our chance was lost

Our U7s orange (B) team played really well - losing to Sandal A 5-3 then drawing with Castleford (both of whom reached the semi-final). The B team scored a really great try - the ball went through 6 or 7 pairs of hands before finally going over the line.

WETHERBY RUFC U7s / U8s - Sunday 14th October 2007

Wetherby RUFC today won the ‘Acorn’ Tournament at Moortown RFC.

This was a ‘round robin’ tournament with Wetherby fielding a mix of both Under 7’s & 8’s in the same squad. Wetherby won all their games, starting off with a 3-0 win against Bradford & Bingley, followed by a 6-1 win over Keighley. After lunch the home team Moortown offered a greater challenge but Wetherby came out on top winning 2-1. The final game provided a 4-0 win over Cleckheaton.

Playing seven a side with an eight man squad gave plenty of game time for the players – all the boys played out of their skins from the first game to the last, I was especially impressed with the defensive effort – only two tries conceded in four games, a great statistic that the squad should be proud of. Not to take anything away from our attacking platform – there were a number of fine individual scores as well as great examples of support play with players running onto the ball at pace.

It was a long day for the players with long breaks between the games, it is a credit to them that they remained focus and dug deep for extra physical effort when asked.

The winning Squad :-

  • Rowan Bentley
  • Harry Contreras
  • Maximus Cooke
  • Daniel Dobson
  • William Hollis
  • Jonathan Lawn
  • Zak Morgan
  • Lewis Wiggett

Thanks to all the parents for their support and giving up their Sunday morning and the best part of the afternoon !! Can those parents that took squad pictures with their camera phones please email them onto me.

Thanks again and well done to the players.

Paul Wiggett.
