Yorkshire Cup 2nd Round - Sunday 9th December 2008
Beverley 19 : 13 Wetherby
If
only the match official had refereed the game and not
continually coached the home side the result would have been
oh so different.
Prolific try scorer John
Wheatley went close with only seconds on the clock only to
be dragged into touch only a matter of feet from the
opposition line, but it was Beverley that took the early
lead with a converted try before Wetherby hit back though a
well taken score form prolific try scorer John Wheatley for
an interval 7 to 5 score line in favour of the opposition.
Shortly after the resumption
Wetherby we rewarded with a penalty 25m out ably converted
by Alex Dus. Beverley again took the lead though a close
range drive over try until Wheatley crossed again after a
superb cross field move to take the score to 13 points to 12
in their favour, but with only 3 minutes to go the match
official over ruled a blatant knock on by Beverley and
awarded them the winning points. Overall a supreme team
effort by the U16`s that now go through to the Yorkshire
Bowl.

Rotherham Clifton 34 : 19 Wetherby - Sunday 2nd November
2008
Wetherby U 16s took the long
trek south to Rotherham Clifton with a scratch squad
decimated by injuries and put up a brave show against a
physically more mature outfit. The game played in
atrocious conditions was credit to both sides.
Wetherby took an early lead through centre Elliot Stearn
taking a slipped ball from Will Pearson to go over with a
converted score.
Rotherham then levelled on the
1/4 hour through a soft try out wide and further stretched
their lead with three further touchdowns after Wetherby lost
wing Dom Siekierkowski & wing forward Tom Giles, sprung
shoulder and knee injury respectively. The U16s,
if nothing else have learned never to throw the towel in and
hit back with scores from Jonny Wheatley & George Heggie to
bring themselves back to within 10 points. But the
last say went to Clifton with a last minute score to give a
34 points to 19 victory in their favour.

Old Rishworthians 28 : 19 Wetherby
Wetherby weakened by several
serious injuries to key players put in a sterling
performance against a formidable Rishworthians outfit, but
for some poor second half tackling & dubious decisions from
the games official the score line of 28 points to 19
advantage to Rishworthians, could have been so different.
The home side took an early
lead through a penalty kick before Wetherby hit back through
a quick line out to take an 8 to 3 lead and had several
other opportunities to go further ahead, but on the stroke
of 1/2 time the opposition snatched the lead against the run
of play.
On the resumption of the second
period Rishworthians began to run away with the game scoring
four unanswered tries through poor defence.
Wetherby, to their credit,
never threw in the towel and had a late revival with touch
downs to wing Rob Hardy, and full back Alex Dus ..

Rodillians 7 : 56 Wetherby
Wetherby Under 16s romped to
their third straight win crushing Rodillians 56 points to 7,
winger Jonny Wheatley clocking up a personal tally of six
tries. With a 25 points to nil half time score line, tries
from George Heggie, Tom Edwards, Alex Dus and two to
Wheatley, the writing was already on the wall.
Rod's started the second period
in a more ebullient mood to snatch a well taken score from
close in, but Wetherby's pace in the backs and superior
forward play dominated the rest of the game with further
scores to Tom Giles at wing forward and Wheatley. Match Photos

Yorkshire Cup 1st Round
Wetherby 40 : 0 Malton & Norton
Wetherby go through to the
Yorkshire Cup 2nd round thanks to a comprehensive 40 points
to nil victory over North Yorkshire opposition Malton &
Norton. The under 16s dominated throughout even
against a much larger pack.
Prolific try scorer Jonny
Wheatley broke the deadlock on 14 minutes with a
scintillating run down the right wing quickly followed 3
minutes later by inside centre Conor Maguire. Giant
second row forward Will Pearson crashed over after taking a
loose ball at a 5 metre line on 1/2 time for a 19 to nil
score line in Wetherby's favour.
Further scores from Alex Dus,
Maguire and the try of the match from wing forward Tom
Edwards after a great team effort down the centre of the
field saw the U16s through to the next round. Match Photos

West Leeds 15 : 19 Wetherby
The Under 16s opened the
new season with a first ever victory over West Leeds on
their own turf going in 19 points to 15 victors in a
close fought contest.
Wetherby made hard work of
what should have been a comprehensive victory
continually spilling the ball , Outside Elliott Stearn
put the visitors ahead after 8 minutes through a fine
forward drive down the centre of the field taking a
quick ball out wide to crash over.
West Leeds soon struck
back going in for the easiest of tries from close range
to take a 7 to 5 interval lead.
Having had the riot act
read to them @ 1/2 time Wetherby were quick off the mark
from a tap penalty to George Heggie under the sticks.
The home side drew level
from a silly mistake close to the Wetherby line and
when they further stretched their lead from a well taken
penalty the writing looked to be on the wall until Alex
Dus sprinted in to take the lead and the game on 65
minutes. Match Photos
