Rodillians 12 : 47 Wetherby

Wetherby Under 15s finished their most successful season to date with a resounding victory over a spirited Rodillians side 47 points to 12.

It was Rods that got off to the better start denying the visitors any possession until nearly seven minutes into the game, but it was Wetherby that eventually took the lead through wing forward Tom Edwards first of his hat trick.  Rods quickly struck back taking a slender lead until Wetherby started to use the scintillating pace of their backs to run in a further four scores from skipper George Heggie one more to Edwards and two to centre Jonny Wheatley before the interval.

Shortly after the resumption winger Seb Davies crashed over in the right hand corner followed within minutes by Edwards who took the ball down the blind side from a scrum 50m out to go in under the sticks.  Rods kept at it and were rewarded with a further touch down but the final say went to the visitors after scrum half George Carr pounced on a loose ball from a 5m scrum and winger Rob Field kept a clearance kick from finding touch to elude a last line of defence.

This to date has been Wetherby Under 15s best season ever winning 16 of their 22 matches.

Wetherby  RFC U15`s North East Tour April 11th - 13th 2008

Alnwick 19 : 22 Wetherby

Houghton 5 : 28 Wetherby

Gateshead 10 : 19 Wetherby

Wetherby U 15`s completed a clean sweep on their recent tour to the North East beating Alnwick 22 points to 19 in a pulsating game that saw the tourists come from behind twice to snatch victory through scores from full back Alex Dus (2) including a well taken penalty, and prop (the human tank) Nathan Clarke. Sunday saw them visit Gateshead where they took on Houghton (County Durham) & hosts Gateshead in a triangular tournament. Gateshead drew 14 points a piece with Houghton in the opener & Wetherby beat visitors Houghton convincingly 28 points to 5, scores coming from flanker Josh Brown - Bolton (his first for the team) Nathan Clarke (2) & centre Jonny Wheatley who went streaking down the left wing to go in under the uprights.

The final game saw the U15`s take on the hosts on what had now become a total bog of a pitch, but despite going down 3 points to an early penalty, Wetherby ground their way back into the game with Captain George Heggie crashing over for the first of his brace for a 5 points to 3 interval lead. Gateshead fought valiantly in what had now become a forwards battle in the mire, but after Heggie went over again followed by Clarke who crashed through numerous defenders taking several over the line with him, the game was won. Gateshead to their credit did not give up however and were rewarded with a consolation score in the dying seconds.

Many thanks to John Strang & Paul Carvin @ Alnwick RFC & Mike Scott & Kev @ Gateshead RFC for their generous hospitality & accommodating us on our tour.

Wetherby 44 : 0 Cleckheaton - Sunday 30th March 2008

Wetherby dominated throughout with powerful forward play and slick handling in the backs.

With an interval lead of 15 points to nil in the home side's favour through scores from skipper George Heggie, centre Jonny Wheatley and fly half Ali Cope the game was still up for grabs, but when prop Nathan Clarke crashed over in the corner through sheer grit and determination the writing was on the wall for Cleckheaton.

Further scores from Tom Edwards and possibly the try of the match coming from a chip over the top by Alex Dus playing at full back, gathered by Elliot Stearn to crash over in the corner and the last hurrah from Wheatley going in under the uprights wrapped up a memorable victory.

Wetherby 12 : 55 Guisborough - Sunday 16th March 2008

The Guisborough touring side did the double beating Wharfedale 88 - 0 and Wetherby 55 points to 12 over the weekend.

Guisborough took a 14 point lead before Wetherby struck back with two well taken tries, the first to centre Jonny Wheatley who sprinted down the right wing to go in under the uprights.  Nathan Clarke then took the home side to within 2 points crashing over after taking excellent ball from a 20 m line out.

With the half time score at 22 points to 12 to the visitors' advantage the game could have gone either way but with a number of questionable decisions from the official in the visitors' favour, the home side's heads went down conceding a further 33 unanswered points.

Wetherby 5 : 0 Old Leodiensians

Wetherby deservedly took the spoils in this close fought but ill tempered encounter running in 5 points to nil.

The juniors dominated the opening half and should have gone over several times except for sloppy handling. The only score of the game came from winger Dominic Siekierkowski, who went over after receiving a spilled ball from centre Jonny Wheatley after 10 minutes.

With the resumption of the second period Leos used the strong wind to their advantage, peppering the full back with high ball and managed to contain the home side in their own half for much of the remainder of the game.  But a resolute Wetherby defence stood firm to keep the Leos onslaught at bay to ensure a much deserved victory.

Wetherby 7 : 19 Selby - Sunday 24th February 2008

Wetherby U15s battled valiantly against a Selby side that had beaten them 59 points to 7 in the Yorkshire Cup just before Christmas to go down 19 points to 7 in a game that they could have so easily won.

Selby were first on the score sheet taking a 7 points lead against the run of play after 14 minutes and further increased the lead to 14 points after sloppy midfield play.  The U15s struck back through a well taken score from centre Jonny Wheatley after slick handling across the backs from a 10m line out to narrow the gap to 7 points.

Selby went over again shortly after the resumption of the second period that saw Wetherby loose 2 of their key players in scrum half George Carr and No. 8 and skipper George Heggie who were both playing for Central Yorkshire against county Durham later that afternoon.  With more commitment across the team the score line could and should have been in Wetherby's favour.  Blind side wing forward Jack Kaye had an outstanding game competing through out.

West Park Leeds  5 : 47 Wetherby - Sunday 10th February 2008

Wetherby Under 15`s extended a new record 5 straight wins against West Park Leeds on Sunday going in 47 points to 5.

The juniors put in a well disciplined performance against a resolute West Park outfit taking a 28 points to nil half time lead through tries from Nathan Clarke, first of a brace, Liam Walker who crashed over from a rolling maul 10m out, debutant Adam Stevenson and a first for winger Josh Nicholson just before the interval.

Winger Dom Siekierkowski went over shortly after the resumption after superb ball across the backs saw him go over in the corner. Clarke then went over for his second from short distance before Park were rewarded for their efforts with a well taken consolation try. Scrum half Barney Roberts rounded off a most successful morning for the U15s for his first score for the team.

Wetherby 36 : 14 Moortown - Sunday 3rd February 2008

The U15s extended their winning streak to 4 games going in 36 points to 14 winners against a depleted but very useful Moortown side.

Wetherby went into a 12 to nil lead through scores from George Heggie (first of his hat trick) and centre Jonny Wheatley, before 'Town struck back to close the scores from a maul 5 metres out.

Heggie edged the home side further ahead after a fine individual try taking the ball from a 10 m line out to crash over.

Wheatley went over for his second after Ali Cope playing at fly half fed after tacking a high ball.  Moortown again came back using the strong wind to their advantage to narrow the gap to 24 to 14.  But further fine scores from Heggie & Cope in injury time sealed the game for a flattering 36 to 14 score line.

Special mention to Tom Edwards, Will Pearson, George Heggie, El Stearn, Ali Cope & Nathan Clarke who had exceptional performances.

Wetherby 15 : 12 West Leeds - Sunday 27th January 2008

Wetherby made hard going of what should have been a comprehensive victory over West Leeds @ Grange Park on Sunday going in 15 points to 12 victors.

The home side were slow off the mark and allowed the visitors an early 7 point lead after lax play, but struck back after hooker Charlie Kinsey-Stephens crashed over the line after receiving the ball from a10m ruck.  Wetherby then stretched the lead further after skipper George Heggie took a quick tap to take the West's defence by surprise to go in under the sticks.

Poor defensive play then allowed West Leeds an easy score shortly after the resumption of the second period to nose ahead. It took an individual piece of brilliance from centre Jonny Wheatley to save the day running in a superb try from 40 metres out for the home side to take the spoils.  Hooker Liam Walker had his usual superb performance leading by example and centre Sam Carter continues to improve with strong runs down the centre.

Wetherby 19 : 0 Rodillians - Sunday 20th January 2008

Wetherby came out on top in this closely contested match at Grange Park on Sunday, going in 19 points to nil victors.

Open side wing forward Tom Edwards scored the opening points after 14 minutes going in under the sticks, Alex Dus converting.

Wetherby continued to dominate the first half but found it hard to penetrate a tenacious Rod's defence until an excellent passing move across the backs saw winger Rob Field go over on the right wing for his first try for the club.

Rod's were determined not to throw the towel in and pressured the Wetherby line on a number of occasions but to no avail after stubborn defence by the home side. Stalwart Jonny Wheatley playing at out side centre sealed the game after centre Sam Carter provided him with excellent ball to streak down the left wing to go in for a converted try.

Wetherby U15s 48 : 21 West Park Leeds U15s  - Sunday 13th January 2008

Wetherby U15s started the new year with an emphatic win over visitors West Park Leeds on Sunday going in 48 points to 21.

Wetherby were quick off the mark with Alex Dus running in the first of his brace of touch downs within the opening 2 minutes.  Park held the home side at bay for a quarter of an hour before centre Jonny Wheatley sprinted down the left wing to go over.  Eliott Stearn  playing at No.8 followed shortly after to further stretch the lead before what surely was the try of the game when full back Tom Giles took a high ball deep in his own half made the break and with the ball going through several pairs of hands came to debutant Ali Cope who went in under the uprights.  Two further tries from Stearn and Dus gave Wetherby an unassailable lead of 36 points to nil.

Park to their credit failed to throw in the towel and struck back with three converted touch downs to narrow the gap but a further score from Wheatley and a Dus penalty gave Wetherby the spoils.  Overall an excellent team performance with special mention to Chris Dack and Ryan Kinghorn who had their best performances all season.

Moortown 10 : 17 Wetherby - Sunday 25th November 2007

Wetherby secured the win they so desperately needed to restore confidence in their ranks after suffering two successive defeats going in 17 points to 10 winners over a gallant Moortown XV.  Town started the stronger of the two sides dominating in forward play with a much larger pack, but a brave defence held them at bay.  The under 15`s greater fitness began to tell as they came back into the game resulting in two first half touch downs for prop Liam Walker for a 10 to nil interval lead.  Shortly after the resumption of the 2nd period outside centre Jonny Wheatley, fresh back from injury, sprinted down the left wing evading several would be tacklers to go in under the sticks converting his own score.  Town refused to roll over and pushed Wetherby the whole way being rewarded with two fine tries.

Wetherby 7 : 32 Bramley - Sunday 18th November 2007

Wetherby dominated for the opening 15 minutes but failed to convert field position into points and when Bramley broke away to score twice down the right wing against run of play the Wetherby heads went down.

Bramley took advantage of poor tackling to run in a further 4 scores Wetherby only managing ac0onverted penalty try in response.

West Leeds 26 : 5 Wetherby - Sunday 11th November 2007

Wetherby fielding a side decimated by injuries were never up for the challenge against West Leeds, going down 26 points to 5 there only score coming from prop Ryan Kinghorn mid way through the 2nd period.

Poor handling, slow ball from the set piece and a total lack of structure to play over shadowed some superb individual performances.

Morley 12 : 88 Wetherby

Wetherby U15's unbeaten run extended to four games on Sunday after overcoming a spirited Morley XV by a comprehensive 88 points to 12 victory.

The Under 15s ran in a total of fourteen tries, with hat tricks for skipper George Heggie &  Alex Dus, two apiece for Liam Walker & Elliot Stearn and one each for Charlie Kinsey- Stephens, Chris Dack, Tom Giles and Jack Kaye.

Wetherby dominated throughout with the much larger pack bossing play with strong runs from Heggie, Walker and prop Will Pearson , who also slotted over two conversions.

Roundhegians 10 : 42 Wetherby

Four tries to debutant Ryan Butcher playing @ out side centre, two either side of the interval secured an emphatic win over Roundhegians.

Wetherby were first on the score sheet in a closely fought first half that that ended 14 points to 5 in Wetherby's favour.  The restart saw Wetherby romp into  a 35 points to 5 lead through scores from Butcher & Jonny Wheatley playing out of position @ scrum half taking the ball from the kick off to dart through the Roundhegians defence to go over from 80 metres.  Alex Dus rounded off the scoring for the juniors to make a final score line of 42 points to 10 in Wetherby's favour.

Wetherby 17 :  14 OId Leodiensians - Sunday 7th October 2007 - Yorkshire Cup 1st Round

Three points was all that separated Wetherby and Old Leodiensians U15's, in a thrilling and hard fought Yorkshire Cup game at Grange Park. In a tie that was always going to be close, it took a well thought out and well executed chip from fly-half Alex Dus for Wetherby to create the first try of the match, Dus touching down just short of the dead ball line, before kicking the extras. Leos hit back with a try of their own, after Wetherby kept Leos out for a long time, the visitors eventually managed to dive over for seven points of their own. Before the half was done, however, Wetherby scored another excellent try. An incisive breakaway from centre Jonny Wheatley, saw him win a length of the field race to score, Dus kicked the conversion.

The second half was closer still, neither side wanting to drop out of the cup in the 1st round. The only try of the half came from more sustained Leos pressure, after Wetherby failed to clear their line from the scrum, Leos dived over from close range on to a loose ball and levelled the scores once again. The scores stayed at 14-14, and the away side would have progressed in the competition if it remained the same, but Dus kicked the all important penalty in front of the posts to give Wetherby a three point lead. An advantage which they successfully defended for the remaining ten minutes. Final score, Wetherby 17-14 Old Leodiensians.

Many thanks to Richard Simpson (Cleckheaton U15`s) for helping arrange this last minute fixture. Wetherby conceded 21 points in the opening quarter before they finally started to make an impact on the game, tries coming from Jonny Wheatley & Alex Dus respectively.

But poor tackling and support play allowed Cleck in for two further scores to seal the game.  Debutants Sam Carter, Josh Nicholson & Tom Forsey impressed.
