Wetherby U7’s to U10’s Tour to Bridlington.
Saturday’s rugby
at Bridlington saw all four age groups play against well organised
Bridlington sides. A shortage of pitch space left the U7 & U8’s
having to take turns playing, Brid offered up a good and well
organised tag team at both age groups, with honours just about even
at the end of the morning. Another touring team - Southport RFC
offered up stiff opposition to both the U9’s and U10’s. The U9’s
played a particularly brutal game against Southport which finished
0-0, the second game was against a touring side from
West
Park, Leeds
who proved to be too strong for Wetherby. The U10’s played a three
way, against Brid and both the Southport U10’s and U11’s – though
not at the same time! Our hosts looked after us well with fine food
and ale – trivia note for those tourists who felt that they
recognised one of the gents from Southport RFC – it was David
Lonsdale from ‘Heartbeat’ who plays dozy David, nice chap he was
to!
Saturday
afternoon, we all had a swim (or complete water aerobic workout for
Richard Smailes) at Bridlington’s Leisure World before making our
way back to the hotel for the final round of the 6 Nations. Saturday
evening, disco and Karaoke, with a special live performance from the
King himself – Elvis (aka Marcus Little!)……… what an evening, the
pics say it all.
Sunday morning,
early rise and coach to Driffield. The U7’s and U8’s had a new
experience of playing tag rugby on an all weather pitch – great fun
it was to, quite a few tired boys but they all played well against a
competitive Driffield tag team. Both touring teams Southport and
West Park (Under 9’s) were also at Driffield which provided a
competitive mornings rugby for the U9’s & U10’s, however the boys
paid the price of having too late a night, being unable to prise
themselves away from the Karaoke machine. The West Park U9’s were
rumoured to have been in bed by 2000hrs on the Saturday night, which
of course is an unfair advantage and not at all in the spirit of
rugby touring.
The facilities at
Driffield were first class and we were all suitably fed and watered
(apart from running out of Guinness), in the great tradition of
touring I am pleased to say that Wetherby RFC were the last to leave
the Driffield club house.
Thanks to all for
a great tour…….. here’s looking forward to 2010.
