Match Reports season 2008-9

Wetherby 5 Ripon 3 - Sunday 9th November 2008

Wetherby RUFC U10s had a successful morning against Ripon winning the tie 5-3 in aggregrate.  The match started in tight fashion with Wetherby dominating early territory although they were unable to convert their authority to points because of Ripon's determined defence until William Smailes gathered the ball 15 yards from the try line and powered his way through three tackles to score.  Jack Thackwray doubled Wetherby's lead with a run from half-way before Ripon took advantage of lax defending to grab one back.  Another try from Thackwray and one each from Devdan Patel and Alexander Smith, both punching through Ripon from short-range, ensured a victory despite two further Ripon tries.  Man of the Match was Robert Dunham with some great runs and formidable tackles on the wing.

Match 1 Wetherby 5 Thirsk 1

Match 2 Wetherby 8 Thirsk 0

Wetherby U10s started the season in style with two comprehensive victories against visitors Thirsk RUFC.  The first game saw the home side dominant from the off, with relentless forward play and crunching tackling allowing Thirsk only cursory excursions into the Wetherby half until well after the break.  For Wetherby, George Heaton scored with a blistering and elusive run from near his own halfway line and Nathan Woods touched down after some good work by the forward line.  Harvey Wiggett did particularly well bringing home three tries including some sharp-witted thinking from a quick penalty which fooled the entire Thirsk defence.  Final score 5-1 to Wetherby.

In the second game, Wetherby reasserted their ascendancy with opportunist blindside tries from Andrew Shepherd and Freddie Loach directly from the scrum and two from Devdan Patel who, for one of his scores, provided great support to Man of the Morning and unstoppable prop, Alexander Smith.  The final result was 8-0 with two more from George Heaton and one each for William Smailes and Harvey Wiggett to finish off the scoring and indeed a great morning for Wetherby.
