Under 9s - from Andrew Clews
Excellent day with all members of the team bringing great credit on themselves and the club. Having been drawn in a group with Morley, Old Leos and Sandal (against whom we have competed the last 2 finals) it was always going to be a tough group. Having opened the festival with a 0-0 draw with Sandal, Wetherby easily beat Old Leos by 5-1. With Morley having lost to Sandal it meant that Wetherby needed to beat Morley in the last game to progress to the final. However, in a very tight game they were very unfortunate to see key decisions go against them and, having had 2 scores ruled out by the referee, lost by 2-1. That meant that Sandal went to the final where they played West Park Leeds. All the Wetherby players played with great skill and determination and the disappointment was very clear to see on the faces of the team.

In a final that was pretty well one way traffic, West Park defended doggedly to hold out for a 0-0 draw in normal time. However, in sudden death extra time they produced a driving move to score in the corner and win the cup.

Under 7s - from Keith Robinson
Wetherby hosted this years under 7s festival. Despite Otley dropping out at the last minute, there were some strong entries with Sandal sending their strongest squad, along with West Park Leeds, Roundhegians, Yarnbury and last years winners, Aireborough.

Wetherby went through the group stages unbeaten before facing West Park Leeds A in the semi-final. Despite some enthusiastic play from West Park, Wetherby proved too strong winning 4-1 to face Sandal in the final. Sandal had also come through undefeated so this promised to be a tough game. Ignoring tired legs, both teams played tremendous open rugby in a high-speed end-to-end game. The result was a 2-2 draw - a fair result for two excellent sides. Every player in the squad contributed to a fine team effort - and with a third under 7s final in three years, we have a record to be proud of!

Please have a look on the website for the few photographs I managed to take during the morning - if anybody has any more, please let me have them so that they can be posted as well.

Under 8s - from Marcus Little
Under 8s Plate team
Placed in the difficult group the Plate team only just lost 6-5 to Sandal A with a great performance. They then lost their way a little losing to a strong Leo’s A side 8-2, but then they regrouped and put up another strong show against West Park Leeds B losing 6-5. Overall the Plate team played fantastically over the competition after being picked in the’ group of death’ against such strong sides, and coming so close against the eventual winners Sandal A.

Under 8s Cup team
The Cup team needed to win all 3 games in the group to get into the final as no Semis were being played. They started well with a 8-5 win against Castleford, and a win against Yarnbury 6-2, but the Cup team knew the crucial game was the last group game against West Park Leeds. Both teams played really well and there was nothing much between them, but West Parks superior passing ensured victory of the game 3-2. West Park then continued on and played Otley in the final who they beat 5-4 in extra time.

Both teams will now regroup together to ‘lick their wounds’ and start to prepare for their new era of rugby next season, ‘U9’s tackling’.
