New to the game?

Here at Wetherby we have a full range of juniors rugby union teams, ranging from under 7s right through to under 17s.  All teams are trained by dedicated and skilled coaches to play rugby union safely and skilfully.  The primary emphasis is on having fun and enjoying the game.

So, you fancy giving the game a go?  You will be wondering about answers to a few questions, either as a  player or as a parent.

  • Do I need to have played before?

No.  Anyone is welcome and you will be given training and guidance from our experienced coaches in the rules of the game as well as fitness, essential skills and tactics in a friendly and encouraging environment.  We recommend coming along to training for a month or so in the first instance to see if you really enjoy the game and the club.

Experienced players are also more than welcome at the club.

Why not give it a go?  Rugby is a great sport to play and to watch.  Parents are encouraged to become involved and to help with the club’s activities – the rugby club is run entirely by volunteers.  That might involve marshalling at any games or festivals organised by the club and of course transporting children to and from games.  If your child wants to play rugby you must be prepared to invest some of your time, if only just to come along and cheer the teams on on a Sunday morning.

  • Which team would I play for?

We have teams from under 7 to under 17s.  Basically, you would play for the team aged above your age before the 1st of September of the year of joining.  So, if you are 11 years old before the 1st of September, you would play for the under 12s.  The table below summarises ages and teams:

Age before 1st September School Year Your team

6 Year 2 Under 7s
7 Year 3 Under 8s
8 Year 4 Under 9s
9 Year 5 Under 10s
10 Year 6 Under 11s
11 Year 7 Under 12s
12 Year 8 Under 13s
13 Year 9 Under 14s
14 Year 10 Under 15s
15 Year 11 Under 16s
16 Year 12 Under 17s

  • I know which team I would play for - what next?

Check out the section below on what kit you will need.  Don't worry too much about buying lots of equipment at the moment, just come along with general sports kit and see if you enjoy it.  Click on one of the links above or to the left to go to the pages for the team you want.  There you will find training times and contact details of coaches, as well as match reports, fixtures, photos etc.

Feel free to come along and watch some matches first or to watch or join in with training.  Don't worry - you won't be thrown into a match until you are trained and confident in how to play.  Matches are played on a Sunday morning, starting at 10am.  Training also is on a Sunday morning if there are no matches, and some of the older age groups also train mid week.

  • What kit will I need?
If you are coming along for the first time, you will need:
some shorts and/or track suit bottoms
one or two t-shirts or rugby shirts
a windproof/showerproof top
a drink
trainers or rugby/football boots with metal studs.  Please do not wear boots with blades or nylon studs as they can cause injuries to both the wearer and other players.
A desire to get muddy and have some fun

If you decide you want to continue, the following kit is essential:
White cotton rugby shorts
a mouth guard - you won't be allowed to play without one at under 9 and above
rugby or football boots with metal studs
a pair of Wetherby red and white hooped socks - available from the club for a few pounds a pair
Wetherby rugby shirt - these are provided by the club free of charge, but must be returned at the end of the season

The following kit is recommended:
Warm clothing such as tracksuit bottoms, woolly hat, gloves, windproof/shower proof jacket
A named drinks bottle and plenty of water to drink
A dry change of clothes and a boot bag for after the match unless you don't mind having a muddy car!

The following kit is optional.  Some wear it, some don't.  It's up to you:
Some players wear head guards, especially in the scrum
Shoulder pads
Thigh pads
Rugby gloves with grips in wet weather

and next...

  • How much does all this cost and where do I get it?

The kit can be bought at most good sports shops or you can buy online using the links on the left of this page.  The club also sells some items such as socks and mouth guards - see the shop page for details.

The cost of the kit will depend on both the size and type of kit you buy.  It can be as little as £50 or so for a set of shorts, boots, mouth guard socks and water bottle.  If you are very serious about taking up the sport, this can build as you buy more specialised equipment such as pads, head guards, boots etc.

  • What about travel to away games?

We play matches both at home and away.  Most games are within 30 minutes or so drive from Wetherby, though some of the older age groups play further afield.  There are no formal travel arrangements and normally parents take their own children to away games, often meeting at Grange Park first.  As you become more accustomed with the club and meet other parents, we often share and it's normally possible to get a lift with other parents or one of the coaches if you arrange it beforehand.
